Understanding The Concept Of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is commonly used to describe any dental procedure which improves the look of gums, teeth and / or bite. It primarily deals with improvement in dental aesthetics in terms of colour, shape, size, shape and overall smile look. The term cosmetic dentistry was first used by Dr Helen Thomas in 1900. Later, it came to include aesthetic dentistry, making it the third largest branch of dentistry. You may want to check out Phoenixville cosmetic dentistry for more.

In addition to cosmetic dentistry, there is a specialization of it called restorative dentistry. Restorative procedures mainly deal with filling of damaged or cracked-up teeth with dental restoration material such as porcelain or composite. For better understanding, we can divide cosmetic procedures in two major groups: Gingive and Non Gingive.

As the name suggests, Gingive cosmetic dentistry deals with the correction of malocclusion, that is, misalignment of the teeth. This includes fixing bite misalignment, teeth whitening, gum recontouring and jaw realignment. On the other hand, non-gingive cosmetic dentistry deals with teeth bleaching, veneers and smile makeover. Sometimes, veneers are used in conjunction with teeth whitening procedures. It includes bleaching of the teeth whitened from metal whitening products like hydrogen peroxide; bleaching of the teeth to remove brown shades; bleaching of the teeth to get rid of yellow shades; filling of chipped teeth; removal of braces; teeth whitening; removal of cavity-causing fillings; etc.
